838,000 Toyota Sienna Minivans Recalled for Defective Sliding Doors

Toyota Sienna minivan recallRoughly 838,000 Toyota Sienna minivans are being recalled because their sliding doors may accidentally open while the vehicle is in motion, the Japanese automaker stated.

The global recall includes about 744,000 minivans equipped with the faulty sliding doors here in the United States.

Specifically, the safety recall involves models made between 2011 and 2016, however, the company has not yet found a way to fix the problem.  At issue is a circuit that may become overloaded. If the door is obstructed or something prevents it from opening, this can trip a motor and cause the unlocked door to open.

It’s unknown at this point whether any injuries or deaths have been attributed to the problem. Meanwhile, owners of these vehicles will be notified by Toyota about the safety recall sometime in mid-January. The vehicles will be fixed by the manufacturer at no cost to consumers.

Product Defects and Liability for Injuries/Death

The manufacturer of a defective vehicle that causes an injury or the death of a loved one can be held liable for these personal injuries or wrongful deaths. A consumer expects that a product is suitable for the purpose it was made and they place their lives in the hands of these manufacturers. When that trust is shattered due to a defective product, they can obtain compensation to make up for their financial losses.
