Mercedes-Benz Owners Hit With Major Recall Over Dangerous Screen Blackout Issue

Mercedes-Benz Owners Hit With Major Recall Over Dangerous Screen Blackout IssueLuxury Nightmare? Mercedes Drivers Suddenly Without Dashboard Information

Mercedes-Benz owners expect premium performance, cutting-edge technology, and reliability when investing tens of thousands of dollars in a luxury vehicle. But for many California drivers, ongoing issues involving digital instrument clusters suddenly going blank have become an alarming and frustrating reality. A situation that California lemon law Attorney James Johnson says has generated a growing number of complaints from worried consumers.

Mercedes-Benz recently announced a recall affecting 144,049 vehicles from the 2024 through 2026 model years. The recall is due to a software problem that can cause the digital instrument cluster to temporarily shut off. The issue affects several popular models, including the AMG GT, C-Class, E-Class, SL-Class, CLE-Class, and GLC-Class. According to federal safety documents, the malfunction may leave drivers without access to critical driving information while the system reboots.

The Luxury Car Problem Mercedes Owners Didn’t Expect

“For a luxury brand like Mercedes-Benz, this is a major issue,” said James Johnson of Johnson Attorneys Group, a California attorney who handles lemon law claims involving defective vehicles. “We’re hearing from Mercedes owners regularly about serious technology failures. In many cases, clients are shocked that a vehicle they spent significant money on is experiencing problems that impact basic safety and drivability.”

Federal regulators indicate the problem stems from software within the infotainment control unit. In affected vehicles, the system may trigger repeated resets, causing the digital instrument display to briefly go dark without warning. During those moments, drivers may temporarily lose visibility of essential information such as speed, warning indicators, and other vehicle functions — a situation that could increase crash risks.

Johnson says his office has been inundated with Mercedes-related complaints involving recurring electronic and software defects, particularly in newer vehicles packed with advanced technology.

“We’ve been bombarded with cases involving Mercedes vehicles experiencing persistent issues like dashboard malfunctions, electronic failures, warning lights, defective backup cameras, fluid leaks, and repeated dealership visits that never fully resolve the problem,” Johnson said. “In most of these cases, we have successfully negotiated vehicle buybacks and replacement vehicles for clients under California’s Lemon Law.”

The recall remedy itself appears relatively simple. In fact, Mercedes plans to have authorized dealerships update the infotainment control unit software at no cost to owners. Dealer notifications began in May, while owner notification letters are expected to be mailed later this summer.

Mercedes Recall Over Blank Instrument Clusters Raises Lemon Law Questions

Still, Johnson cautions that recalls do not always solve the underlying frustrations consumers face — especially when problems persist despite repair attempts. Recent cases handled by Johnson Attorneys Group included buybacks for vehicles with infotainment issues, faulty electric systems, dual battery issues, pre-collision malfunctions, Electronic Control Unit (ECU) defects, loss of power, check engine system and other defects. Some of the Mercedes-Benz models successfully resolved were a 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-300W, a 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL55R4,and a 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE-350 W4.

“People buy Mercedes vehicles because of the brand’s reputation for excellence,” Johnson said. “When your luxury vehicle spends more time at the dealership than in your driveway, consumers should understand they may have legal rights. California’s Lemon Law exists to protect drivers who repeatedly deal with defects that substantially impair the vehicle’s use, value, or safety.”

Owners experiencing recurring digital display failures, repeated repair visits, or unresolved electrical issues are encouraged to document all service records and repair attempts. In some cases, consumers may qualify for a manufacturer buyback, cash compensation, or a replacement vehicle under California law.
