Software Glitch May Affect Airbags and Seat Belts
Roughly 300,000 Ram 1500 pickup trucks are being recalled by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. The automaker says their 2019-2020 Ram pickups are equipped with faulty software controlling the deployment of airbags and certain seat belts. It turns out that if there is a collision, the very equipment installed to save lives may not work, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The NHTSA stated that a software error may happen after the truck’s engine is turned off. Specifically, the computer module may not reset properly and if that happens the airbags and seat-belt pretensioners wouldn’t work if the vehicle is involved in a crash.
The seat belts, for example, must work in a split second to tighten the belt. They work together with airbags to reduce the chance that passengers will be hurt.

While the potential for this glitch to happen is “highly remote” and there are no known incidents, the automaker said the recall is necessary to ensure the safety of people who drive these pickup trucks.
A warning sign to Ram truck owners is the instrument panel may flash a warning light.
About a third of the recalled trucks have not yet been sold and are still at dealerships, Fiat Chysler said. Additionally, the 2020 trucks are pre-production models still owned by the company.
Owners of affected vehicles may get their Ram pickup fixed starting this month.
