Volkswagen Recalls Popular ID.4 Electric SUVs
Volkswagen Group of America Inc. has announced a significant recall involving more than 44,000 Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUVs due to concerns that defects in the high-voltage battery system could lead to overheating and potentially cause a vehicle fire.
According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects 43,881 Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles from the 2023–2025 model years. Regulators say a battery issue in these vehicles may increase the risk of a thermal event, prompting Volkswagen to issue corrective action.
In addition, 670 ID.4 models from the 2023–2024 model years are subject to a separate recall after manufacturers identified possible misaligned electrodes within certain battery cell modules. NHTSA warns that this defect can significantly increase the likelihood of a battery fire.

Because of the seriousness of the risk, owners of the affected 670 vehicles are being advised to park their vehicles outdoors immediately after charging and to avoid charging indoors overnight until repairs are completed. Federal safety officials are also recommending that owners avoid Level 3 DC fast chargers and limit battery charging to no more than 80% as a temporary safety measure.
For the larger group of recalled vehicles, Volkswagen dealers will perform a high-voltage battery software update and, if necessary, replace the battery at no cost to the owner.
For California consumers, repeated safety recalls, extended repair delays, or vehicles taken out of service due to fire risks may raise concerns under the state’s Lemon Law. Electric vehicle owners who experience ongoing battery issues, warning alerts, or long repair times may have legal options, including potential buyback or replacement rights.
If your Volkswagen ID.4 has been affected by this recall and the problem is not resolved within a reasonable time, it may be worth speaking with a California lemon law attorney to understand your rights.
Volkswagen ID.4 Recall: What Owners Need to Know

A vehicle with a serious safety defect — especially one involving fire risk — can qualify as a lemon if:
-
The problem isn’t fixed after a reasonable number of repair attempts
-
The vehicle is out of service for an extended period of time
-
The defect substantially affects safety, use, or value
Electric vehicle owners may also face long repair delays due to parts availability, which can further strengthen a lemon law claim.
What Can You Do?
If your Volkswagen ID.4:
-
Has been recalled multiple times
-
Is unsafe to charge or park normally
-
Has been in the shop for weeks or months
-
Still shows warnings or battery issues
You may have the right to a buyback, replacement vehicle, or cash compensation under California law.
