More than 84,000 Kia and Hyundai vehicles are being recalled nationwide due to a defect that could cause the instrument panel display to temporarily go blank while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects 41,651 Hyundai vehicles and 42,677 Kia vehicles.

The Hyundai recall covers several 2026 models: The Ioniq 5, Kona, Palisade, Palisade Hybrid, Santa Cruz, Santa Fe, Santa Fe Hybrid, Sonata, Sonata Hybrid and Tucson, as well as 2025–2026 Tucson Hybrid and Tucson Plug-in Hybrid vehicles.

Kia’s recall includes 2026 Carnival, Carnival Hybrid, EV9, K4, K5, Sportage, Sportage Hybrid, and Sportage Plug-in Hybrid models, along with 2025–2026 Sorento, Sorento Hybrid and Sorento Plug-in Hybrid vehicles.

Hyundai reported that electrical noise within the power management integrated circuit may cause the instrument panel display to reboot intermittently during vehicle operation, leading to a temporary loss of visual information. Kia said a similar issue could cause the display to enter an overheat protection mode and go blank while driving.

When the instrument panel is not functioning, critical information such as vehicle speed, warning lights, and tire pressure alerts may not be visible to the driver.

To address the issue, both manufacturers will provide a free software update for the instrument panel display. Owners may install the update either over the air or during a visit to the dealership.

Hyundai plans to mail owner notification letters beginning March 27. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 855-371-9460. The Hyundai recall number is 293.

Kia expects to begin mailing owner notification letters on March 26. Kia customer service can be reached at 800-333-4542, and the recall reference number is SC361.

Vehicle owners can check whether their car is included in the recall by searching their Vehicle Identification Number at nhtsa.gov.
