Owners of the Volkswagen Tiguan have been complaining to federal safety officials over the years about acceleration issues with the family-sized SUV, but does the vehicle qualify as a lemon?
“When pressing the gas through an intersection, the vehicle seems starved for gas and does not accelerate and almost stalls,” the owner of a 2023 Tiguan from Chicago, IL recently told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The NHTSA website has 184 communications from the manufacturer to 2023 Tiguan owners and dealerships. The top issues involve the engine and engine cooling system, the electrical system, and other equipment.
There are 24 complaints with some consumers reporting their Tiguan shakes, misfires, stalls, hesitates, dies after a stop, and fails to accelerate as it should.
“This is a brand new car,” complained another owner. “Seems incredibly unsafe especially when I have a family of six in the vehicle.”
A similar issue with a 2021 Tiguan was handled by Johnson Attorneys Group recently. The owner reported they experienced engine shaking and the check engine light was on. The vehicle spent 45 days in the shop and had two repairs. However, the dealership couldn’t get the parts needed for the final repair.
Johnson Attorneys Group determined in this case the Tiguan SUV was a lemon. The California lemon law firm obtained a cash settlement for the client from Volkswagen. The German manufacturer has been building the Tiguan since 2007 and has sold more than a million units including 76,227 in 2023 and, so far, 21,626 in 2024.
