Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru EV Recall for HVAC, Defroster Issue

94,320 Electric Vehicles Recalled Due to Inoperative Defogger and Defroster

Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru Recall Over 90,000 Vehicles for Defroster IssueWASHINGTON — More than 90,000 Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru vehicles are being recalled because of problems with their heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems that could impair driver visibility, federal officials announced.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a Sept. 4 notice that certain 2023–2025 Toyota, Lexus, and Subaru models are equipped with faulty software in the HVAC electrical control unit. The defect could cause the defogger and defroster to stop working, thus preventing the system from properly clearing frost, ice, or fog from the windshield.

According to the recall, the issue could lead to electrical compressor failure, increasing the risk of a crash.

Toyota, Lexus, Subaru Vehicles Affected by Recall

The recall covers approximately 94,320 vehicles, including:

  • 2023–2025 Toyota bZ4X (all-electric crossover SUV)

  • 2023–2025 Lexus RZ (luxury all-electric SUV)

  • 2023–2025 Subaru Solterra (electric SUV)
