Ford Recalls 1.9 Million Vehicles Over Faulty Rear-View Cameras
Ford Motor Company has announced a massive recall of approximately 1.9 million vehicles worldwide due to defective rear-view cameras that may display inverted, distorted, or blank images. The defect poses a potential safety hazard by reducing visibility when drivers shift into reverse.
This recall affects a wide range of 2015 to 2019 model year Ford and Lincoln vehicles, including:
-
Lincoln MKC, Lincoln Navigator
-
Ford Mustang
-
Ford F-Series (F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550)
-
Ford Expedition, Edge, Ranger
-
Ford Transit, Transit Connect, and Econoline vans
According to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about 1.45 million of the recalled vehicles are in the United States, 122,000 are in Canada, and roughly 300,000 are in other international markets.
Ford has acknowledged receiving more than 44,000 warranty claims tied to the defect. The auto maker is also aware of 18 related accidents. Ford, however, is not aware of any injuries at this time. Ford dealers will inspect and replace the rear-view cameras at no cost to owners.
This recall comes after a series of similar safety actions by Ford in recent years:
-
In April, the automaker recalled 160,000 vehicles from the 2015 model year for rear camera failures.
-
In 2020, Ford recalled over 620,000 vehicles for a related issue, a move that prompted an NHTSA investigation into whether the company acted quickly enough.
-
That recall was expanded in 2022 and again in March 2024, covering an additional 24,000 vehicles.
-
In November 2024, Ford agreed to pay a $165 million civil penalty after regulators determined the company delayed recalling vehicles with known safety defects.
Finally, in a separate notice, Canadian auto parts supplier Magna International also announced a recall of more than 250,000 rear-view cameras installed in certain Ford and Stellantis vehicles.
