Ford Recalls Over 270,000 Electric and Hybrid Vehicles for Rollaway Risk
What California Owners Need to Know About Their Lemon Law Rights
Ford has announced a major safety recall affecting more than 270,000 electric and hybrid vehicles in the United States due to a defect that could cause vehicles to roll away after being placed in park. For California drivers, this type of defect raises serious safety concerns—and may also trigger important protections under the California Lemon Law.
Vehicles Included in the Recall
According to Ford, the recall applies to certain model years of the following vehicles:

2022–2026 Ford F-150 Lightning (Battery Electric Vehicle)

2024–2026 Ford Mustang Mach-E

2025–2026 Ford Maverick (Hybrid)
The issue involves the vehicle’s integrated park module, which may fail to properly engage when the driver shifts the vehicle into the park position. If the module does not lock as intended, the vehicle could move unexpectedly, increasing the risk of property damage, injury, or worse.
Why This Defect Is Serious
A failure to remain securely in park is not a minor inconvenience—it is a fundamental safety defect. Rollaway incidents can occur without warning and may endanger drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and nearby vehicles. Defects affecting braking, steering, or vehicle control are often considered substantial safety issues under California law.
Ford’s Proposed Fix
Ford states it will correct the issue through a software update to the park module, which will be provided at no cost to vehicle owners. Owners will be notified and instructed on how to obtain the update through authorized dealerships.
While a software update may resolve the problem, repeated repair attempts, extended time in the shop, or continued safety concerns could still give rise to Lemon Law claims.
How California Lemon Law May Apply
Under the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, California’s Lemon Law protects consumers when a vehicle:

Cannot be repaired after a reasonable number of attempts, or

Is out of service for an excessive number of days while under warranty
If your Ford electric or hybrid vehicle has experienced rollaway issues, warning messages, or repeated park-related failures—even after a recall repair—you may be entitled to a buyback or replacement vehicle, plus reimbursement of related costs.
