Mercedes-Benz is recalling roughly 1.3 million vehicles in the United States due to an ongoing problem with its emergency call system. The eCall service sends emergency medical provider services if there is an accident.
However, some owners report it has been sending police and paramedics out the wrong locations. So far there is only a single incident reported in Europe. There have been no known incidents reported in the U.S., according to the investigation.
The problem stems from the emergency communication software module, according to a defect report issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The module may be fixed by an over-the-air update or by taking the vehicle to the dealership.
The problem affects many different Mercedes Benz and Mercedes-AMG vehicle models ranging from the 2016 through 2021 years.
The Mercedes vehicles subject to the recall include the A-, B-, C-, E-, GT-, S-, SL-, and SLC-class; CLA- and CLS-class; as well as the G-, GLA-, GLB-, GLC-, GLE-, and GLS-class. These were all sold for the 2016 and 2021 model years, but specific model years can vary among these products. It’s wise to check to see if your vehicle is part of the recall at the NHTSA recalls site.
Recalled vehicles will receive an update to the communication module software. This may completed at the dealership. Also, those who have the Mercedes Me subscription may be able to complete the update over-the-air. The recall is set to begin on April 6.
