Audi Recall for 89,000 Q5 SUVs for Potential Engine Fire Risk

Audi Issues Recall for Q5 SUVs  — What California Vehicle Owners Need to Know

Volkswagen announced a major safety recall affecting nearly 89,400 Audi SUVs in the U.S., so California drivers need to take note, especially if you’ve recently purchased or leased a 2022–2024 Audi Q5 or Q5 Sportback.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this recall stems from a defect in the engine cylinder head that could lead to engine oil leaks. The issue? Cover screws may loosen over time, allowing oil to escape through the screw holes. If this leaking oil comes into contact with hot engine components, it could pose a serious fire hazard.

Affected Models:

  • 2022–2024 Audi Q5

  • 2022–2024 Audi Q5 Sportback

Audi warns owners of these vehicles that early signs of a leak may be difficult to detect. However, drivers should watch for rising engine temperatures or possibly visible smoke coming from the vehicle’s engine bay. If you experience either, stop driving immediately and seek professional assistance.

Free Repairs — But Will It Fix the Problem?

Audi will begin contacting affected vehicle owners by mail in June 2025. Authorized dealers will inspect and replace the faulty screws at no cost to the owner. You can also check if your vehicle is affected by calling the NHTSA Safety Hotline at (888) 327-4236 or by entering your VIN on the NHTSA website.

What This Means for Lemon Law Protection in California

If your Audi Q5 has been in the shop repeatedly for engine issues — or if you’ve experienced safety concerns like smoke, oil leaks, or overheating — you may be entitled to compensation under California’s Lemon Law. This includes a refund, replacement vehicle, or cash settlement depending on your situation.

As a California lemon law attorney, I’ve helped clients who were told their vehicle was “fixed” only to have the problem return days or weeks later. If your Audi is under warranty and experiencing repeated defects that affect its use, value, or safety, you may not have to keep driving it or paying for it.
