Artificial Sound Generator May Fail Posing Risk to Pedestrians
RECALL: BMW of North America, LLC notified 3,400 EV owners of its 2022-23 i4 eDrive40 and its iX xDrive50 electric vehicles that the artificial sound system sometimes fails and the vehicles may be too quiet.

Under the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, electric vehicles are required to generate artificial sound as a safety measure to make them more detectable to pedestrians.
These BMW EVs are not loud enough and are equipped with this artificial sound, but the German automaker learned that some of them fail to activate when the vehicles are started. If they are not working properly and could be a safety risk to pedestrians.
BMW EV Recall i4 and i5 Vehicles
More than 3,400 vehicles are affected under the March 17 recall:
- BMW i4 eDrive40, 2022-2023: 1,988 vehicles recalled
- BMW iX xDrive50, 2022-2023: 1,443 vehicles recalled
Owners of these vehicles may take the car to an authorized dealer and request a free software update on their defective unit.
There are several other recalls for BMW EV i4 and i5 electric vehicles. One is for doors opening while in motion, two others are urgent recalls for the high-powered battery losing power and for causing a fire risk. Finally, there is one for the center display missing information.
