Owners of certain 2017 to 2019 Chevrolet Bolts are learning of a potential fire risk to their vehicles and now being asked to park them outside and away from their homes.
Indeed, due to a fire risk, select Chevrolet Bolt vehicles will need to be repaired before their owners can park them in the garage or near any structure.
General Motors issued a recall of 50,932 Chevrolet Bolt vehicles after it confirmed several unattended fires. The problem stems from the high-voltage battery pack underneath the back seat’s bottom cushion. These vehicles are equipped with cell packs have the potential to smoke and ignite internally. If this happens, a fire could spread to the rest of the vehicle. This poses a certain risk to a structure fire if the vehicle is parked inside a garage or near a house.
What is more alarming, is these vehicles are at risk of catching fire even if they are disconnected from a charging unit, parked and turned off.
NHTSA Confirms 5 Fires; 2 Injuries
Five known fires with two injuries are so far confirmed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The federal safety administration is investigating the situation. Only the vehicles with high voltage batteries produced at LG Chem’s Ochang, Korea facility are subject to the recall.
At least one home was ignited when a fire in one of the vehicles spread from the engulfed vehicle. That’s why NHTSA officials are asking that owners of the recalled vehicles park them is outside. They should also make sure they are away from structures until they are repaired.
Chevrolet is working on a permanent fix for the Chevrolet Bolt. However, the immediate remedy is a software flash that is performed at the dealership. This acts more like a band-aid rather than a proper repair as it simply limits the Bolt’s EV maximum charge to 90 percent. Owners are already limited to a 239-mile driving range and therefore this will reduce that by roughly 24 miles.
