Federal Safety Regulators Warn Problem Could Lead to Crash

Mazda Recalls 2024 CX-90 Vehicles for Steering Wheel Power Loss

Mazda North American Operations has issued a recall for 43,752 of its 2024 CX-90 SUVs due to power loss in the steering wheel system that could cause a driver to crash.

Drivers may suddenly experience a loss of power steering assist due to an assembly issue with the worn gear in the steering wheel system, according to a Jan. 19, 2024 press release by Mazda.

“While driving, the customer may feel a sudden increase of effort when steering the vehicle,” according to Mazda.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports the crash risk was significant enough to require a recall of the affected 2024 Mazda CX-90 vehicles.

Owners of the vehicles should take their Mazda to the dealership where service repair workers will reapply grease to the gear teeth and replace the spring that is causing the worn gear, NHSTA reports.

Mazda will send out an official notification letter to owners on March 18. Owners may also want to contact the Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500 and press option six. Mazda’s number for this recall is 6542A.
