Mazda 3 and CX-30 Recall Due to Potential Faulty Airbags

Mazda Recalls Over 171,000 Vehicles for Dangerous Airbag Defect — What California Drivers Need to Know

Mazda Recall for Airbag Issues and Warning Light Malfunctions

Mazda has issued a major recall affecting 171,412 vehicles from the 2024 and 2025 model years, citing a defect that may prevent airbags from deploying in a crash—a serious safety risk for California drivers.

The recall, filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), impacts 51,857 Mazda 3 sedans and hatchbacks and 119,555 CX-30 crossovers. The issue stems from a malfunction in the Sophisticated Airbag Sensor (SAS) unit, which can be triggered if the car’s battery becomes fully drained while the ignition switch is in the “ON” position.

Here’s why it matters:

If this specific battery drain scenario occurs, the airbag system can store an internal fault. Once the battery is recharged and the vehicle is restarted, the airbag warning light will illuminate—but the airbags will no longer deploy in the event of a crash.

Mazda’s Fix for CX-30 and Mazda 3 Vehicles

Mazda plans to fix the issue by either reprogramming the SAS unit or replacing it entirely. Affected vehicle owners will be notified by mail and asked to bring their car to a Mazda dealership for the free repair. Mazda expects to complete owner notifications by the end of July 2025.

Currently, Mazda is not offering a reimbursement program, as all affected vehicles are still under warranty.
