Ford announced a major safety recall affecting more than 741,000 pickup trucks and SUVs because of a transmission defect that could allow vehicles to roll away. The problem has even happened when the vehicle was shifted into Park. Several Lincoln luxury SUVs are also included in the recall.
According to Ford, a defect involving the transmission’s parking mechanism may allow the parking pawl to engage while the vehicle is still moving. This can damage internal transmission components responsible for keeping the vehicle securely in Park. If that happens, the vehicle could unexpectedly roll away after the driver exits, increasing the risk of a crash, property damage, or serious injuries.
Vehicles Included in the Recall
The recall affects the following vehicles:
- 2018–2021 Ford Expedition
- 2018–2021 Lincoln Navigator
- 2020–2021 Ford Explorer
- 2020–2021 Lincoln Aviator
- 2021 Ford F-150
How Ford Plans to Fix the Problem
Ford dealerships will perform the necessary repairs at no cost to owners. The repair includes:
- Updating the vehicle’s powertrain control module (PCM) software.
- Inspecting the transmission for damage.
- Replacing damaged transmission components when necessary.
Ford expects to begin mailing interim owner notification letters on August 3, with a permanent repair anticipated to become available in April 2027.
What This Recall Could Mean Under California Lemon Law
A recall does not automatically qualify a vehicle as a lemon. However, if your Ford or Lincoln has experienced repeated transmission problems, unexpected rollaway incidents, or has been in the dealership multiple times for the same defect without a successful repair, you may have rights under the California Lemon Law.
Meanwhile, if a manufacturer cannot repair a substantial defect within a reasonable number of attempts while the vehicle is still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, California law may require the manufacturer to:
- Buy back the vehicle,
- Replace it with a comparable vehicle, or
- Compensate you for your losses.
Don’t Ignore Transmission Problems
Therefore, if your vehicle rolls after being placed in Park, displays transmission warning messages, or has required repeated transmission repairs, schedule service with your dealer immediately. Keep copies of all repair invoices and service records, as they may be important if your vehicle continues to experience the same defect.
