Volvo Recall Affects Certain 2021 to 2025 Model Vehicles Due to Backup Camera Defect
Volvo has issued a major recall affecting more than 413,000 vehicles due to a malfunctioning backup camera. The issue? The rearview camera may fail to display an image when the vehicle reverses, posing a significant safety risk. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the defect stems from a software issue in vehicles equipped with Google’s built-in infotainment system.
The recall impacts nearly all pre-2026 Volvo models with the Google system, including:
-
2023–2025 Volvo S60
-
2022–2025 Volvo S90
-
2023–2025 Volvo V60 and V60 Cross Country
-
2022 Volvo V90 and 2022–2025 V90 Cross Country
-
2021–2025 Volvo XC40
-
2022–2025 Volvo XC60
-
2023–2025 Volvo XC90
To remedy the defect, Volvo is offering a software update, but owners must bring their vehicles to a dealership for the fix.
Polestar, Volvo’s former EV brand, is facing a similar issue. Every Polestar 2 sold in the U.S.—a total of 27,816 vehicles—is being recalled due to a “synchronization error” between the camera and display. While it’s unclear if the problem is identical to Volvo’s, the required solution is also a software update.
