Ford, Volkswagen and Daimler Trucks issued more recalls than any other auto manufacturer in 2022 or a combined 39 percent of all recalls this past year, according to a report released by the United States Department of Transportation.
Ford Motor Company issued a total of 67 recalls or 17 percent of all recalls by auto makers in the report for 2022. These recalls affected 8.6 million vehicles with issues ranging from windshield wipers and airbags to issues affecting the powertrain.
One of the more recent recalls issued in November covered 634,000 vehicles comprising the 2020 and 2023 Ford Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs due to fire risk from possible cracked fuel injectors.
Meanwhile, second-place goes to Volkswagen Group of America, which also owns the Audi and Porsche brands. The German auto maker filed 45 recalls affecting more than a million vehicles or 11 percent of the recalls in the report. They covered a wide range of issues ranging from air bags and rearview cameras to engine and fuel-system issues.
In third place, Daimler Trucks had 42 recalls for 273,286 vehicles or 11 percent of the total recalled in 2022.
Additionally, Chrysler FCA LLC or Stellantis came in close behind Daimler Trucks with 38 recalls (10 percent of the total) for more than 3 million vehicles this year and recreational vehicle manufacturer, Forest River Inc., had a total of 35 recalls (9 percent of total) for 203,694 vehicles.
All together the top five manufacturers accounted for 58 percent of all 2022 recalls among the 12 on the list.
It’s worth mentioning that while Tesla came in 11th on the list with 5 percent of the recalls, the Austin, Texas-based electric vehicle maker was second in terms of the number of vehicles recalled with 3.7 million cars.
