1.3 million Subaru Forester, Impreza Sedans and Wagons Recalled for Brake Light IssueRoughly 2.3 million vehicles are being recalled worldwide by Subaru due to a faulty brake light issue.

The recall, the largest ever for Subaru with the exception of the Takata airbag recall, affects about 1.3 million U.S. vehicles and 1 million in North America and Japan, according to news reports.

Specifically, the recall targets 2014 to 2016 Forester, 2008 through 2016 Impreza, and 2013 through 2017 Crosstrek vehicles. The problem with these vehicles is that the brake lights may stop illuminating if certain cleaning products containing silicone are used. Apparently, gas from the cleaning products may cause an electrical short if it seeps into the brake lamp switch. If this happens, the brakes may not work and a crash could result.  Also, vehicles equipped with keyless ignitions, may be prevented from starting and cars with automatic transmissions may slip out of park.

At this time, Subaru has had 33 reports of the brake light problem in the U.S.  The fix is to replace the defective parts with new ones at no expense to the vehicle owners.  Owners will be officially notified on or after April 29.
