Volkswagen ID.4 Electric Vehicle Recall for Software Issue

Volkswagen ID.4 Electric Vehicle Recall for Software IssueVolkswagen Group of America, Inc. will recall 79,953 electric SUV vehicles due to a potentially deadly crash hazard discovered in its 2021, 2022, and 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 models.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports there is a software glitch in these vehicles. The issue could prevent the vehicle from displaying the speedometer information and or the rearview camera images.

“Vehicles may experience center displays and instrument panel displays that do not boot, or that sporadically reset,” according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “This can result in loss of speedometer information or loss of rearview camera image.”

The federal agency initiated an investigation into the electric vehicle’s software issue back in April 2023. Volkswagen subsequently issued a voluntary recall in early May 2024.

Owners should expect to receive official notification by mail starting on July 12 and they may visit their dealership to get the software updated for free.

Volkswagen ID.4 Recalls

The Volkswagen ID.4 was marketed to consumers as “a car for ‘the millions, not the millionaires.’ While the 38,000 units the automaker sold in the United States in 2023 ranks low in comparison with other electric vehicle brands such as Tesla, it was up 84.2 percent from 2022 and accounts for 11.5 percent of the German automaker’s overall sales in the United States. Volkswagen also sold 30,000 ID.4s in Germany in 2023. So far this year, Volkswagen has sold 34,600 of its 2024 ID.4 and ID.5 models worldwide in its first quarter and U.S. sales were down 40 percent.

Furthermore, Volkswagen issued six recalls for its 2023 ID.4, it has one investigation, and 143 complaints on the NHTSA website.

Some of the previous owner complaints for the 2021 to 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 models included its doors suddenly opening while driving. Other issues were the 12-volt battery cable was a fire risk as it may short, headlights not working, the electric motor sealing ring was incorrectly assembled, incorrectly installed passenger airbags and seat belt assemblies, and there was an inoperative rearview camera display.
