Honda Recalls 772,000 Honda and Acura Vehicles with Faulty Airbags

Honda Motor Co.  has issued a new recall for 772,000 more Honda and Acura vehicles equipped with defective front seat passenger air bag inflators.

The new recall affects the following vehicles :

  • 2005-2006 Acura MDX
  • 2005-2012 Acura RL
  • 2008-2012 Honda Accord
  • 2006-2011 Honda Civic
  • 2007-2012 Honda Fit
  • 2010-2012 Honda Insight

The recalled vehicles are all in the United States. The Japanese airbag supplier to Honda and other auto manufacturers made the announcement as part of a total recall of 1.29 vehicles since it first learned of the problems with defective airbags. The airbag inflators use a chemical ammonium nitrate that may explode under certain conditions and cause injuries or even death.

Takata airbags are allegedly responsible for the deaths of as many as 16 people worldwide as well as roughly 180 injuries.

There are more than 100 million vehicles from 17 auto manufacturers that are subject to recalls due to these airbags including 69 million that are in the United States. It could take years for replacements to be made due to the scope of this disaster.
