Federal safety regulators are kicking off an investigation into faulty 2022 Ram pickup trucks and Jeep Wagoneer SUVs after reports from owners that their engines shut down at low speeds and would not restart.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported Monday roughly 150,000 of the Stellantis-built vehicles are equipped with the company’s 5.7-liter Hemi e-Torque mild hybrid system. This system allows the vehicle to power itself.
The “complaints state that the malfunction warning light with the battery fault symbol appeared on the dash,” the report said. “Many complaints state that a low voltage condition fault is present, sometimes not being able to restart the vehicle.”
The system works by converting captured energy from a driver braking into power for its electrical components. Also, the vehicles have a 48-volt battery pack and a motor-generator to send power to the crankshaft while gears are shifted.
U.S. auto safety regulators are investigating dozens of complaints that the vehicles may lose power, suddenly shift into park, and randomly apply the emergency brake.
The problem is similar to one affecting certain 2021 to 2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV vehicles that led to a recent recall for 94,275 vehicles.
Upon the completion of the investigation, the NHTSA will decide whether the automaker should issue a recall.
