High-Voltage Batteries May Overheat
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) issued a recall for roughly 6,400 I-PACE vehicles in the United States after the automaker discovered there is a potential fire risk from overheating high-voltage electric vehicle batteries.
Owners of these vehicles are being told to park outside and away from structures until their vehicle has been repaired. The vehicles are equipped with batteries made by LG Energy Solution. Federal safety regulators say five automakers have recalled vehicles made by the company due to possible defects that could cause fires and or potential stalling. There is currently a probe into the South Korean battery manufacturer by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) due to issues with these lithium-ion batteries.
Tata Motors (TAMO.NS), the parent company of JLR, reported the company will update the battery energy control module software as well as replace the battery modules if needed in certain vehicles. Specifically, the recall covers vehicles from the 2019 to 2024 model years.
The engineering team is working to determine if the battery pack assembly is defective or is causing thermal overload conditions.
The Jaguar I-PACE recall was issued after reports of eight vehicle fires in the United States, but so far there are no known injuries or accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The first zero-emission electric I-PACE was released in 2018.
