There are 13 recalls and 72 complaints about the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport SUV to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The latest recall by Volkswagen Group of America for both the model years 2020 and 2021 Atlas Cross Sports is a safety risk involving the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS).
This recall affects a total of 224,704 vehicles including the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan LWBs, Golf Sportswagen A7s, Golf Alltracks, Golf R GPs, Audi Q3s & Audi A3 Cabriolets. It also includes 2019-2020 Jetta NFs, Jetta GLIs, Golf GTIs, Atlas’s, Golf A7s & Audi A3s, and 2021 Atlas FLs.
Specifically, the tire pressure monitoring system might not detect air pressure loss when deflating occurs among all four tires simultaneously. Indeed, if there is suddenly a loss in pressure to all four tires, there is going to be a serious risk of a collision.
Volkswagen plans to notify owners in December or if you own one of these vehicles you can call customer service at (800) 893-5298 or Audi’s customer service at (800) 253-2834.
2021 VW Atlas Cross Sport SUV Owners Complaints
Owners of the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport report numerous issues since buying the $32,000 SUV. One of the problems involves the automatic emergency braking system failing to engage. One owner told the NHTSA that they crashed into the back of another motorist because the system didn’t kick in. To make matters worse, the airbags failed to deploy. They took the SUV to the dealership where it was repaired, but the problem persisted and actually got worse. The driver reported the automatic emergency braking (AEB) system randomly engaged and the vehicle suddenly started slowing down on the freeway.
There are numerous reports about this automatic braking issue by owners who say it didn’t activate when it should and it activates when it shouldn’t. It’s a dangerous issue that needs to be resolved.
Problems with Airbags
As for the airbags, Volkswagen is aware of the issue and has issued two recalls, but some owners complain the replacement airbags are often unavailable.
The first issue involving airbags came back in November 2021. The VW recall reported that the SUV’s air conditioning system drain tube could be blocked. If this happens, it could cause water to leak inside the vehicle near the air bag control module. The manufacturer told dealers will repair the drain tube and replace the air bag control module at no cost. Additionally, back in June, Volkswagen issued a recall for the front side airbags due to failure to deploy.
Damaged Steering Knuckles
Also, Volkswagen alerted owners of another serious issue affecting these SUVs back in November 2020. The automaker warned owners of damaged steering knuckles that could fail and cause drivers to loose the ability to steer the vehicle.
