McLaren 2019 Senna, 2016-2020 McLaren 720S, 2020 McLaren GT and Others Recalled over Fire Risk

A potential fire risk has prompted British automaker McLaren Automotive Inc. to recall 2763 of its high performance supercars including 157 of its $1 million 2019 McLaren Senna cars; the McLaren 720S built between 2016 and 2020; the 2019 McLaren GT and the 2017 to 2019 570GT.

The majority of the recalled vehicles are the McLaren 720S vehicles, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website.

At issue is these high-performance sports cars are built with a foam pad underneath the fuel tank that can absorb water over time. If this happens, the moisture might corrode the fuel tank and possibly lead to fuel leaking and potentially a fire risk. The automaker will take out the NVH pad and inspect the gas tanks for corrosion. These pads may or may not be replaced with new one. Also, the automaker will only replace gas tanks that show corrosion.

The specific vehicles affected are the 2016 to 2020 720S, the 2020 GT, 2019 Senna, and the 2017 to 2019 570GT, according to the NHTSA website.

The recall was prompted after two vehicles reported problems. One of those vehicles came from a Latvian customer who reported smelling fuel coming from his 570GT that was a former press car. The vehicle had been “subjected to high mileage, wear and tear and greater range of road conditions than a typical vehicle of the same type and age,” McLaren said.

The recall does not include any vehicles that lack the foam pad. McLaren hasn’t yet notified owners of affected vehicles about the recall. Also, at this time, McLaren is not aware of any other vehicles affected by the moisture-retaining foam pad. McLaren owners can check the NHTSA recall website to see if their car is included.
