Roughly 1.4 million BMW cars and SUVs are at risk of engine fire prompting the German automaker to announce two separate recalls in the United States.
Specifically, the parts on certain BMW vehicles could overheat and cause a fire. The larger recall for 740,561 vehicles involves the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve and the smaller recall for 672,775 vehicles affects wiring and electrical connectors used in the system that controls air flow to the heating and air condition. In this recall, if the system overheats it can cause the connectors to melt. The company knows of at least four separate cases reported involving injuries related to this.
The first recall affects some 740,561 vehicles: 2008 through 2011 model years for the 128i; and 2007 to 2011 model years for the 328i, 525i, 528i, 530i, X3. X5 and Z4.
The second recall is for 672,775 vehicles in the following models and years: 2006 through 2011 — 323i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi and M3; 2007 through 2011 for the 335; and 2009 through 2011 for the 335d .
Additionally, some of the BMW 3 series vehicles are affected by both recalls.
The recall officially begins on Dec. 18 and dealerships will be replacing the wiring and connectors affected.
