Roughly 52,600 2017 Ford F-250 pickup trucks are being recalled due to a problem where the vehicles may potentially roll away after a driver puts the vehicle into the park position, according to a statement by the Ford Motor Co.
“If the parking brake is not applied, this could result in unintended vehicle movement with the gear selector in park without warning, increasing the risk of injury or crash,” Ford said.
Ford is advising owners of these vehicles to use the parking brake at all times until their vehicle is corrected and it’s advisable to avoid parking on inclines whenever possible.
“These are heavy-duty vehicles that can weigh as much as 10,000 pounds so this problem is a serious safety risk to consumers and others who could find themselves in the path of a roll-away vehicle,” said Attorney James Johnson, a California lemon law and personal injury attorney.
The vehicles, powered by the 6.2-liter gasoline engines, were all built between Oct. 9, 2015 and March 30 at the Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker’s Louisville, Kentucky truck plant and were sold in the United States and Canada.
Ford intends to replace the vehicle’s damaged park rod actuating plate. Although the lever may be physically put in park, it does not achieve a mechanical lock. Owners will have to wait for the parts to be available before they can take their vehicle to a local dealership for a free repair.
There are no reports of injuries or deaths due to this issue, Ford said. However, this is the third recall by Ford, the second-largest auto manufacturer in the U.S., this past week. This past Wednesday, Ford announced a recall for 211,000 vehicles with faulty door latches and 230,000 vehicles with a potential engine fire risk after reports of 29 fires were received by the company.

The faulty door latch problem is nothing new. Ford has previously recalled roughly 4 million vehicles with this problem since 2014 in six separate announcements. The most recent recall was for 2.4 million cars in late 2016.
