DEARBORN, Mich., (March 29, 2017) – Reports of 29 fires associated with several Ford model cars has resulted in a recall of nearly a quarter of a million vehicles in the United States and Canada.
Roughly 230,000 vehicles are being recalled by Ford Motor Company due to a fire risk under the hood of certain vehicles such as the 2013 to 2015 Ford Escape, Ford Fiesta ST, Ford Fusion and the Ford Transit Connect 1.6-Liter GTDI. These vehicles all have the 1.6-liter GTDI engines installed.
The recall is one of three safety recalls and one safety compliance issued in North America.
The problem is caused by a lack of coolant circulation. This may cause an engine to overheat and a cylinder head could possibly crack. If this happens, a pressurized oil leak could take place and the oil may cause a fire in the engine compartment if it comes into contact with a hot engine surface.
Ford Recall Vehicles (equipped with 1.6-liter GTDI engines) Include:
- 2014 Escape – Louisville Assembly Plant, Feb. 12, 2013 to Sept. 2, 2014
- 2014-15 Fiesta ST – Cuautitlan Assembly Plant, Jan. 22, 2013 to May 27, 2014
- 2013-14 Fusion – Hermosillo Assembly Plant, Feb. 15, 2012 to June 6, 2014
- 2013-15 Transit Connect – Valencia Assembly Plant, June 13, 2013 to Dec. 14, 2014
Most of the affected vehicles (208,584) are located in the United States and federalized territories. There are also 21,854 in Canada and 318 in Mexico.
The Ford reference number for this recall is 17S09.
Owners of these vehicles should check their mail for instructions from Ford about how to check and refill coolant. The vehicles are still drivable, but it may be necessary to have it looked at by the dealership to see if it needs a coolant level sensor installed.
