On the heels of a massive Kia recall just last month, Hyundai announced two recalls this month: One for the Elantra sedan, Kona SUV and Veloster hatchback; and the other for the Santa Fe Sport SUV.
The South Korean automaker noted that both are a safety risk and involve a potential fire hazard.
Elantra Sedans, Kona SUV, Veloster Hatchback Recall
First, there is a recall for more than 125,800 model-year 2019-20 Elantras and model-year 2019-21 Konas and Velosters for defective piston oil rings. The parts, installed on 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engines, did not get properly heat-treated in the manufacturing process.
If not replaced, the vehicle’s engine could be damaged and drivers may suddenly stall and or crash. Hyundai reports that the rings can be too hard and can be chipped, scuffing the engine cylinder. Furthermore, if the oil does leak onto hot exhaust components, there is an increased risk of a fire. However, the piston problem has caused five fires, but no injuries.
Hyundai dealers will resolve the issue by inspecting and or replacing the engine if necessary. Also, the South Korean automaker will deploy piston ring noise sensing system software.
Santa Fe Sport Recall Antilock Brake System Modules
Hyundai is also recalling roughly 151,200 model-year 2013 to 2015 Santa Fe Sport SUVs for defective antilock brake system modules. Specifically, the brake fluid could potentially leak inside the module. Should this happen, it could result in an electrical short and a fire risk to the vehicle’s engine compartment whether the vehicle is parked or driving.
To fix the issue, dealerships will replace the ABS multi-fuse as well as inspect and replace the ABS module.
Owners should park their vehicle outside and away from structures.
Hyundai Will Notify Owners on June 25th
Hyundai will make repairs to these vehicles for free. For more informaton about the recall contact National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236.
