Ford Recalls Nearly 700,000 SUVs Over Fire Risk — What Owners Need to KnowCertain Bronco Sport and Ford Escape SUVs Recalled

Ford has issued a major recall affecting nearly 700,000 of its Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs due to a defect that could cause engine fires — a serious safety concern that highlights the importance of consumer protection laws such as the California Lemon Law.

The recall applies to specific 2020–2022 Escape and 2021–2024 Bronco Sport models equipped with Ford’s turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine, Reuters reports. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from fuel injectors that may crack and leak fuel into the engine compartment. This leaked fuel can drain onto hot surfaces, such as the turbocharger or exhaust components, potentially causing an under-hood fire.

Ford estimates that approximately 0.3% of the nearly 695,000 recalled vehicles may have this defect. While that number may sound small, the risk to drivers and passengers is significant, especially considering this is an expansion of similar recalls from 2022 and 2024.

Ford Offers Temporary Fix

To address the issue, Ford is issuing a temporary fix: an update to the engine control software that includes fuel injector leak detection. This interim remedy will be provided free of charge at Ford or Lincoln dealerships. A more permanent repair is still in development, and affected owners will be notified once it becomes available.

Ford has stated the recall could cost the company $570 million, and it will be reflected in the company’s second-quarter 2025 financial results.

If you own a 2020–2022 Ford Escape or a 2021–2024 Bronco Sport, visit the NHTSA recall website and enter your VIN to see if your vehicle is affected.
