Owners of 85,000 Ford Explorers in the 2020 to 2022 model years are being notified about a recall for a possible engine failure.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) sent out notifications on August 19th to owners of these vehicles equipped with the police interceptor utility package.
Ford is warning owners the defect could cause an engine compartment fire. The automaker states that “in the event of an engine failure, engine oil, and fuel vapor may be released into the engine compartment and accumulate near ignition sources such as hot engine or exhaust components.”
So far as of July 9, 2024, Ford is aware of 13 reports from consumers of under-the-hood fires in North America that resulted from engine block breaches on Explorer PIU vehicles. These are SUVs that were built with 3.3L engines and were manufactured before June 2, 2022.
There are no reports of fire resulting from engine block breaches on non-police vehicles.
Furthermore, owners of the affected vehicles should park and shut off the engine immediately if they hear unexpected engine noises, notice a reduction in engine power, or notice smoke coming out of the engine compartment.
Once at the Ford dealership, the automaker will provide updates to the powertrain control module software.
Also, dealers are being told to inspect the vehicles to find out if there is a connecting rod bearing failure and they could potentially replace the engine long block.
Ford Explorer owners will pay nothing for all these inspections and repairs.
Owners should contact Ford’s customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford’s number for this recall is 24S52.
