Ford Recalls 140,000 EcoSport, Fusion Vehicles
Over the past few years, owners of certain 2018 to 2022 Ford EcoSport SUVs have repeatedly complained to federal safety regulators about engine and brake failure while driving their vehicles.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration listened to those complaints and last September opened an investigation into 240,000 2018-2021 Ford EcoSport vehicles.
That’s when the automaker eventually agreed to look into the problem and discovered a faulty part located inside the engine’s oil pump was the culprit. Now owners are being alerted to a recall for 140,000 vehicles. The recall includes the Ford EcoSport SUVs, along with 2016 to 2018 Ford Focus sedans and hatchbacks that are also equipped with these faulty oil pumps. The recalled vehicles have a 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder EcoBoost engine as well as an automatic transmission.
Faulty Ford EcoSport Oil Pump
Specifically, there is a faulty part located inside the engine’s belt-driven oil pump. Ford found out there is a drive belt tensioner arm within the oil pump that could fracture and if that happens, the engine could lose oil pressure. Drivers are alerted to the issue by loud engine noise, low oil pressure, and an illuminated check engine light on the dashboard. However, sometimes it’s too late and the faulty oil pump could cause severe engine damage or loss of power braking or engine power while driving.
To date, Ford Motor Co. has received roughly 2,100 warranty claims for the issue and there was a single traffic accident caused by the problem where two people were injured.
If you own one of these vehicles, the good news is you will be able to get it fixed for free at your local Ford dealerships. The service department will replace the oil pump drive belt tensioner assembly with a redesigned part. However, many Ford owners already fixed their vehicles so they will need to request reimbursement from Ford. Finally, those that need the repair will still need to wait for the replacement parts to become available. Owners may contact Ford at 866-436-7332.
