FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas (April 7, 2016) — A man was killed on March 31 in a crash being blamed on a defective Takata airbag that had not been replaced despite widespread news of recalls and nine previous deaths.
The driver who was killed was behind the wheel of a 2002 Honda Civic when the vehicle’s airbag inflator ruptured and resulted in his death.
The vehicle was inspected by police and federal highway safety inspectors who together determined the man’s death was linked to the faulty airbags.
The man’s death brings the total number linked to the faulty airbags in the United States to 10 people.
The airbags manufactured by Takata Corp. are under recall. Some 20 million vehicles from 12 car manufacturers are subject to the recall due to the potential risk of them exploding and shooting out sharp metal shrapnel onto occupants of these vehicles.
