Ford Motor Company has issued another safety recall affecting 10,001 vehicles, citing a manufacturing defect involving the engine’s piston dome that could potentially crack, cause a loss of drive power, and increase the risk of a crash.

According to information reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the piston dome in certain engines may have been manufactured incorrectly. The defect could affect engine operation and, under certain circumstances, result in a sudden loss of propulsion. Specifically, the defect mostly affects roughly 5,200 Bronco Sport models. The Explorer equipped with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost inline-four has 3,071 units affected under the recall. In all affected vehicles, the piston domes can fail after a crack develops at the interface between the nickel-resistant insert and surrounding aluminum material, the NHTSA reports.

The recall is identified by Ford as 26S61.

Which Ford Vehicles Are Included in the Piston Dome Recall?

The recall affects certain 2026 model-year Ford vehicles, including:

2026 Ford Bronco Sport (5,199 units)
2026 Ford Explorer (3,071 units)
2026 Ford Mustang (237 units)
2026 Ford Ranger (432 units)
2026 Ford Bronco (1,062 units)

Because recall campaigns apply only to specific vehicles within a model range, owners should not assume that every vehicle of a listed model is affected. NHTSA recommends checking a vehicle’s 17-character VIN to determine whether an individual vehicle has an open recall.
