RECALL NEWS: Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, Cadillac Escalade

A GM recall due to a serious engine defect is making headlines this week.
General Motors is recalling approximately 721,000 full-size trucks and SUVs worldwide—nearly 598,000 of them in the U.S.—due to a potentially serious engine defect in its popular 6.2-liter V-8 engines. The recall affects several top-selling 2021–2024 models, including the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Tahoe, Suburban, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV. A stop-sale order has also been issued for unsold affected vehicles.
This massive recall comes in the wake of an ongoing investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which began earlier this year after receiving at least 39 consumer complaints involving sudden engine failures. Although the federal investigation remains open, GM has voluntarily taken steps to begin inspections and repairs.
GM Recall Serious Engine Defect
The issue stems from internal manufacturing defects affecting critical engine components—specifically the crankshaft and connecting rods—which can lead to a loss of power or complete engine failure. GM’s service bulletin outlines that affected vehicles must undergo inspection. If no internal damage is found, the dealer will replace the oil filter and cap and switch to a thicker 0W-40 oil. If the engine fails inspection, it will be repaired or completely replaced.
This defect poses a serious safety risk for California drivers, especially those experiencing repeated engine issues. Under California’s Lemon Law, owners of these recalled vehicles may be eligible for refunds or vehicle replacements if their truck or SUV has been in for multiple repairs or out of service for extended periods due to this defect.
