Tesla Recall 376K Electric Vehicles for Power Steering Assist Failures

Tesla Recalls 376K Electric Vehicles for Power Steering Assist FailuresSteering Issues Reported in Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Vehicles

Tesla announced a recall for 376,000 electric vehicles in the United States due to a glitch involving its electric power-assisted steering feature that could lead to a collision.

The recall, which provides a software update, affects certain 2023 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles that operate outdated software, according to a report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Drivers of these vehicles have reported difficulty steering, particularly at low speeds, the NHTSA report said.

The NHTSA has been investigating Tesla vehicles this past year after owners reported numerous steering failures.

Some motorists told federal safety regulators they couldn’t turn the wheel at all. Others noted it would take more effort to turn the steering wheel.

At least 50 vehicles had to be towed due to the issue, officials said.

Tesla told federal safety regulators that some 2023 Model 3 sedans and Model Y crossovers are running older software. This could result in an overvoltage breakdown which could overstress the motor drive components on the printed circuit board.

The automaker explained that the steering is unaffected if there is an overstress condition while the vehicle is in motion, however, if the vehicle stops its steering assist may fail and could even remain disabled once it begins to drive again.

Furthermore, Tesla has received at least 3,012 warranty claims and 570 field reports through January 10, 2025. The electric vehicle maker released an over-the-air software update in October 2024 to fix the problem, however, the recall report was released on Feb. 19, 2025.

Finally, most of the affected vehicles have already updated their software as of January 23, 2025, Tesla said.
