32K Jeep Wrangler Hybrid SUVs Recalled for Fire Risk
A small number of Jeep Wrangler 4xe SUVs are being recalled after an internal investigation by Stellantis discovered a fire risk while the electric vehicles were parked.
The automaker’s routine review of customer data found eight vehicle fires from Jeep Wrangler 4xe SUVS that were parked and turned off, Stellantis said in a statement. Six of these fires involved Jeeps that were connected to chargers and two were not charging at the time of the fire.
The Stellantis recall affects roughly 1 percent or 32,125 of the automaker’s 2021 to 2024 hybrid Jeep Wrangler 4xe SUVs. Also, the company said there were no other Wrangler models affected by the problem.
“The vehicles may be driven,” Stellantis added. “However, the company is advising owners to refrain from recharging these hybrid vehicles and to park them away from structures and other vehicles, until they are remedied.”
Owners of the affected vehicles will require a software flash, but if there is still an error code the battery pack will be replaced, Stellantis reported.
High Voltage Battery Pack Issue Reported in 2022
Last year there was a separate issue involving some of the same Jeep Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrids, but the loss of battery power in these cases affected only the 2022 and 2023 model year SUVs.
The NHTSA reported the high-voltage battery pack in these Wranglers had the wrong fasteners securing them to the 200-amp fuse. This was causing high resistance in the fuse interface and led to excessive heat and possibly failure of the fuse. Jeep owners were at risk of losing power and ultimately this was a crash risk.
