Ram, Jeep, Gladiator EcoDiesel Models Recalled
Owners of certain Ram 1500, Jeep Wrangler, and Jeep Gladiator trucks report dangerous engine stalling due to defective High-Pressure Fuel Pumps.
Sometimes it happens without warning and other times there may be a warning light on the dashboard or noises under the hood. Drivers complain they could be put in harm’s way or they could crash if the vehicle stalls on roads and freeways.
The automaker is issuing a recall for roughly 60,000 vehicles due to the issue that could cause the pump to fail prematurely. Specifically, the recall covers the 2020-2022 Jeep Wrangler, Ram 1500, and 2021-2022 Jeep Gladiator vehicles equipped with 3.0-liter turbo diesel engines. Chrysler has more than 200 related warranty claims to date for the problem.
Chrysler, FCA US, LLC sent owners a letter warning them about the safety risk back on Nov. 29th, 2022, but the automaker is now sending recall notifications on August 24th.
Many owners complained to federal safety regulators that they don’t feel that their vehicle is safe to drive.
Engine Stalling is a Crash Risk
If the high-pressure fuel pump fails, it could allow component debris to enter the fuel system. This would cause fuel starvation and eventually an engine stall. Drivers worry that if they stall in traffic they could get rear-ended by another motorist.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website lists complaints by some owners about this issue. For example, the owner of a 2021 Jeep Wrangler told federal safety regulators their vehicle abruptly stopped and they were unable to restart the engine. Another owner was driving their 2021 Jeep Wrangler at approximately 15 mph when the engine “cut out and the engine light came on.” The driver managed to pull over, however, the engine would not start.
The automaker intends to replace the high-pressure fuel pump at the dealership at no cost to owners. However, drivers who feel their vehicle is a safety risk or it is unrepairable after several attempts to fix it, may have grounds for a lemon law claim.
