Owners of the 2023 Mercedes EQS 450 Electric Vehicle are already reporting problems with the forward collision warnings to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Furthermore, our lemon law firm recently learned about a Southern California owner who had the motor replaced, just two months after purchase with 3,000 miles on the vehicle.
There are other potential issues that electric vehicles may face such as battery degradation, the availability of charging infrastructure and compatibility, glitches to software and electrical system malfunctions.
Forward Collision Warning System Issues
The NHTSA has received at least four complaints by owners of these luxury electric vehicles. The car owners all reported problems with the forward collision warning system and some say they were nervous about driving it after this happened.
On driver from Los Angeles told the federal safety agency in January that they experienced a sudden and hard stop while driving around 35 to 40 mph up a hill. “It was a violent and sudden jolting stop, and all four passengers’ seatbelts activated, firmly tightening and restraining us in our seats,” the report said. “My wife’s head whipped back and forth, resulting in an enduring headache for her through the rest of the evening.” The driver told safety regulators there were no obstructions in the road or traffic around them when it happened.
Another motorist from Virginia described a similar issue to the NHTSA that happened in February. The vehicle had only 4,000 miles on it and was traveling around 35-40 mph. Suddenly, the vehicle experienced “phantom braking,” even though there were no other vehicles nearby, the report said. A third motorist reported experiencing a similar incident later in February.
Finally, a fourth motorist reported two incidents involving sudden hard braking back in October 2022. This driver was also traveling around 35-45 mph with no nearby vehicles when the car suddenly braked as if there was a pending collision. “It was very scary, it was so violent I thought I had hit something in the road, but it was a clear, dry, sunny day with no road hazards, obstacles or anything else that would have caused it,” the person said.
New Mercedes Motor Replacement
Johnson Attorneys Group has also learned of a case in Orange County where the owner’s vehicle experienced a computer system shutdown at a charging station. They had the vehicle towed to the dealership for repairs. However, a short time later, the car started flashing lights on the computer screen and the vehicle shut down by the time they got home. The vehicle was returned to the repair shop and had its motor completely replaced. The vehicle had just 3,000 miles and was purchased only a couple months old at the time of the incidents. Overall, the car spent more than 30 days in the shop for repairs.
