You may recall Hyundai’s 2020 Super Bowl commercial where it introduced its new Smart Park feature that allows drivers to park their car with a button or remote control key fob.
Celebrities Chris Evans, John Krasinski, Rachel Dratch and David Ortiz talk in heavy Boston accents in the Super Bowl commercial discussing how the “Smaht Pahk,” feature on the key fob parks a Hyundai even without the driver in the vehicle.
The commercial demonstrated how well it could park even in tight spaces and without a driver sitting at the wheel.
Fast forward to April when Hyundai has announced it will recall some 11,870 2020 Sonata and Nexo vehicles due to a glitch in the Smart Park System where the vehicle may unintentionally move.
The remote parking-assist software glitch these vehicles are experiencing could lead to a collision, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration fililng.
Hyundai plans to reprogram the software that runs in its Remote Smart Parking Assist technology.
The driver controls the “Smart Park” system by pushing a button inside the car before exiting or using a remote-control function on the key fob.
The problem that prompted the recall is the feature may allow the vehicle to move prior to instruction from the driver.
There are no current accidents or injuries known to have taken place as a result of the problem. Hyundai will fix the software glich at no charge starting on June 4. Owners of affected vehicles may check the NHTSA recalls website to see if their vehicle is involved.
