2 Million Toyota, Honda & Chrysler Autos recalled for Faulty Air Bags

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced Saturday that Toyota, Honda and Chrysler are recalling more than 2 million vehicles for the second time in an attempt to fix a problem involving air bags that spontaneously inflate while cars are running, according to a NHTSA press release.

These are vehicles that had already been recalled for faulty air bags, but the manufacturer was unable to completely fix all of the vehicles. Roughly 15 percent of the vehicles recalled in the first attempt failed because the faulty electronic control unit made by TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. of Livonia, Michigan was only partially replaced. Under this new recall, automotive manufacturers plan to completely replace the faulty electronic control unit.

“This is unfortunately a complicated issue for consumers, who may have to return to their dealer more than once,” said NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind. “But this is an urgent safety issue, and all consumers with vehicles covered by the previous recalls should have that remedy installed. Even though it’s a temporary solution until the new remedy is available, they and their families will be safer if they take the time to learn if their vehicle is covered and follow their manufacturers’ instructions. A hassle is much better than a family tragedy.”

The vehicles subject to recall, manufactured between 2002 and 2004, include certain Acura MDX, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Pontiac Vibe, Dodge Viper, Honda Odyssey, Toyota Avalon and Corolla models, the report said.

Additionally, roughly 1 million of the vehicles made by Toyota and Honda are also subject to a separate air bag recall. Takata Corp. of Japan had recalled airbags that upon being deployed would rupture and thus fail to protect occupants from injuries and potentially deaths.

So far there are nine reported cases including some involving various injuries that are connected to both of these air bag malfunctions.
