Ford recalls 2 million pickup trucks as seat belts could spark fires

Ford is recalling roughly 2 million F-150 pickup trucks in North American after learning about a safety issue involving seat belts that can spark and cause fires.

Federal safety regulators put pressure on the auto maker to recall certain 2015 to 2018 pickup trucks after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) began investigating fires in these top-selling pickup trucks in August.

The vehicles affected are the Regular Cab and SuperCrew Cab trucks. Specifically, the vehicles that were built between March 12, 2014 and Aug. 23, 2018.

While there were no injuries reported, Ford has received 23 reports of smoke or fire from owners of these vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. It turns out that the pretensioners, which gradually tighten and restrain passengers prior to a collision, have been generating excessive sparks that may ignite gases inside a support pillar. This pillar is situated between the front and back seats of the vehicles. The report stated that these sparks may set off a fire in the insulation or carpet.

In fact, three out of the five fires reported to the NHTSA, completely destroyed the pickup trucks.

The manufacturers of the seat belts is ZF-TRW and now-defunct air bag and seat belt maker Takata, which was purchased by Joyson, another auto parts supplier.
