Ford, Mazda 2018 Recall 35,000 Ranger and B-Series Pickups for Defective Takata Air Bag Inflators

Ford ranger recall A month ago, Ford Motor Company reached out to 2,900 owners of the 2006 Ford Ranger pickup trucks and warned them not to drive them after finding out that a West Virginia man was killed by an exploding inflator.

Now the auto maker is alerting others about these dangerous Takata airbags. The owners of certain Ford and Mazda vehicles are being alerted to a recall of more than 35,000 pickup trucks in North America to fix dangerous Takata air bag inflators that have a high risk of exploding.

Under this recall, some 33,428 2006 Ranger and 1,955 2006 Mazda B-Series small pickups are targeted as vehicles that should not be driven until they are fixed. In fact, the manufacturers are asking that these vehicles be towed to a repair facility to have their faulty inflators fixed.

The Ford Rangers on the do-not-drive list were built between Aug. 5 and Dec. 15, 2005. Others vehicles not on the list are under scrutiny as well and may be added at some point.

The danger for owners of these and other affected vehicles is real. At least 22 people have died and more than 180 have suffered injuries when their airbags exploded. The problem stems from the chemical used by Takata to create a small explosion to inflate the airbags in the event of a collision. This ammonium nitrate can deteriorate over time and burn quickly, resulting in the metal canisters containing the airbags to explode and metal shrapnel to spray into the faces of vehicle occupants.

The recalls by Takata and auto makers total more than 69 million in the United States and upwards of 100 million worldwide.
