DETROIT — A new recall announcement today by General Motors Co. affects some 2.42 million vehicles mostly in the United States with defects including everything from defective seat belts and air bags to transmissions and fire-related problems.
GM says there have been no reported fatalities linked to the four defects announced below at this time.
- Seatbelt recall – The issue here is that the front safety lap belt cables can become worn and separate or fray rendering them unsafe for front-seat passengers. GM is recalling 1,339,355 vehicles that have been identified with these belts. Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia full-size crossovers from the 2009-2014 model years and Saturn Outlooks from 2009-2010. Dealerships that sell the full-size crossover vehicles have been told they cannot sell new or used models of these cars until the required repairs have been performed on them.
- 4-speed automatic transmission — GM says the shift cable becomes worn out over time and as a result it “mismatches of the gear position indicated by the shift lever.” The recall affects 1,075,102 of the previous generation 4-speed automatic transmission Chevrolet Malibu, as well as 2004-2008 model years and Pontiac G6 from the 2005-2008 model years.
- Defective air bags – The passenger side air bags could partially deploy during a crash because of poor welding in the instrument panel assembly. Some 1,402 Cadillac Escalades and Escalade ESVs from the 2015 model year are affected. GM has halted sales of the 2015 Escalade ESV and sent letters and emails to 224 customers who bought the cars instructing them to keep people out of the front passenger seat until the defect has been repaired.
- Risk of fire – Defective retention clips that hold the generator fuse block to the vehicle’s body may loosen and cause a potential fire in 58 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD full-size pickups from the 2015 model year.
GM estimated the cost of today’s recall will set them back about $200 million.
