Mercedes-Benz USA plans to recall some 58,323 luxury SUVs made in 2016 and 2017 due to an electric power steering issue that could create a loss of power and increased crash risk for drivers.
“This is a dangerous defect that could cause serious injuries or even death,” said Attorney James Johnson. “A driver experiencing a loss of power steering would be unable to control the vehicle and a crash is highly likely.”
Mercedes-Benz reports that it plans to notify owners of certain cars due to an electric power steering connector that was not properly sealed, resulting in water leaking into the control unit.
The German automaker is asking vehicle owners to take their cars back to the dealership to have the connector replaced and an inspection of the electric power steering rack, which may also need replacing. The repairs will be performed free of charge.
The vehicles affected include the 2016 GLE300d 4Matic; E400 4Matic Coupe; GL63 AMG; GLE350; GLE350 4Matic; GLE350d 4Matic; GLE400 4Matic; GLE43 AMG Coupe 4Matic.
The 2017 models subject to the recall are the E300 4Matic; GLS63 AMG 4Matic.
Additionally, the following models in both years, 2016 and 2017: GL350 4Matic BlueTec; GL450 4Matic; and GL550 4Matic.
