This is a new recall for an old problem.
Roughly 1.4 million Hyundai and Kia cars and SUVs are being recalled by the South Korean-based automaker due to a safety risk associated with the vehicles’ engine failure and stalling. It’s an issue that the company had with other models two years ago.
Fortunately there are no known injuries or collisions. The recalled vehicles, which are located in the United States, Canada and South Korea, are some of the auto manufacturer’s most popular models. The U.S./Canada recalled vehicles are all either a 2-liter or 2.4-liter gasoline engine as follows:
- 2013 and 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport SUV
- 2013 and 2014 Hyundai Sonata midsize cars
- 2011 to 2013 Kia Sportage SUV
- 2011 to 2014 Kia Optima midsize cars
- 2012 to 2014 Kia Sorento SUV
The American vehicles were all manufactured at the Hyundai’s engine plant in Alabama.
Hyundai and Kia stated in documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the problem stems from debris left over from manufacturing that is inside the engines and restricting oil flow to connecting rod bearings. The oil actually cools the engine so this restriction therefore causes temperatures to rise and bearings to wear and fail prematurely. Some motorists may experience their engine stalling.
Signs of this problem include a knocking sound from the engine that increases as the car speeds up and or engine warning lights on the dashboard display.
Owners who experience these problems should contact their dealerships. Hyundai and Kia are in the process of notifying owners and dealers and the recall is scheduled to begin on May 19.
The recall is the same engine problem Hyundai had two years ago with its 2011 and 2012 Hyundai Sonata sedans. The automaker recalled 470,000 of these vehicles in September 2015.
