2024 Land Rover Discovery, Range Rover Recall Major Engine Fire Risk

2024 Defender, Discovery, Range Rover Major Engine Fire RiskImagine driving down the road in your brand new 2024 Land Rover or Range Rover SUV when the engine suddenly catches on fire.

Johnson Attorneys Group was recently contacted by an owner of one of these SUVs who told us they had to stop, pull over, and watch helplessly as the vehicle became fully engulfed in flames.

The case highlights a major safety issue in certain 2024 Land Rover Defender, Discovery, Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Velar, and F-Pace vehicles.

Fortunately, Jaguar Land Rover North America has acknowledged the issue and issued a recall for 2,128 SUVs.

The recall applies to vehicles for the 2024 model year. Most of the vehicles affected come from the Land Rover models. There are 1,995 units including 910 Defenders, 235 Discovery SUVs, 303 Range Rovers, 500 Range Rover Sports, and 47 Range Rover Velars. There are also 133 Jaguar F-Pace vehicles.

Investigators have identified these models as having a defective engine oil filter housing made from an inferior plastic. The incorrect specification of plastic housing installed in these SUVs will crack over time and leak oil into the engine and engine bay. If this happens when the engine is hot, there is a risk of an engine fire.

Multiple complaints to the automaker and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) from owners led to a recall by Jaguar Land Rover North America.

The automaker will replace the filter housing, oil filter, and O-rings at no charge to owners.

Meanwhile, owners of these vehicles should be aware there are at least two other recalls for certain 2024 Land Rover Range Rover and Land Rover Range Rover Sport vehicles. One addressed improperly bonded body panels and the other for a loss of drive power because the transmission oil pressure may decrease and cause the clutch to shift into neutral gear. Owners were notified of these recalls in Dec. 2023 and July 2024.
