Kia is recalling roughly 427,000 Telluride SUVs due to a rollaway risk when parked after a defect was discovered in the vehicles.
Owners are advised to use their parking brake when they park their vehicle until they have it repaired.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports the intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft may not fully engage in certain 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and select 2024 Tellurides. Therefore there may be “unintended vehicle movement” over time after owners put their vehicle into the park position. This is considered a potential safety issue due to the risk of a crash.
Kia America has issued a recall for its Telluride SUVs even though there are no known injuries or crashes.
The automaker suspects that improper assembly in the factory was the cause of the shaft engagement problem. Most of the vehicles affected were the 2020 to 2023 models. However, roughly about 1 percent of the Tellurides manufactured between Jan. 9, 2019, and Oct. 19, 2023, are also thought to have the defect.
Kia dealers will update the affected cars’ electronic parking brake software. Also, the service centers will replace any damaged intermediate shafts at no charge to owners.
Finally, if an owner previously repaired their vehicle they will be reimbursed. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed May 15, 2024.
