Urgent Recall of Faulty Takata Air Bags: Mazda, BMW, GM, Toyota, Honda and Nissan

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has issued an urgent recall of 4.7 million vehicles in the United States due to defective airbags manufactured by Japan-based Takata Corp. that are attributed to the deaths of at least four people and numerous injuries including blindness.

The airbags that are under recall have already injured and killed occupants of vehicles equipped with the safety device because they have either failed to inflate or have ruptured and sprayed metal fragments into drivers and passengers.

Owners of vehicles equipped with these airbags are asked to immediately return to their dealers to get them repaired.

The recall covers as many as 12 million worldwide that were manufactured by companies including Mazda, Toyota Motor Corp., Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Corp, BMW and General Motors.

The federal safety agency said car owners may check their vehicle identification number (VIN).to see if their car has a Takata airbag installed by going onto this website: http://www.safercar.gov/.
