American Honda Motor Co. is recalling 124,077 vehicles due to potential brake failure after discovering an improperly assembled part in the brake system of several Honda and Acura models including the Civic, Ridgeline, Passport, Pilot and Acura MDX.

The model years affected are the 2020-2021 Honda Civic, 2020-2023 Ridgeline, 2021-2023 Passport, 2021-2022 Pilot, and the 2020 Acura MDX, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) filing.

Honda reports that during the assembly process, the brake master cylinder was improperly attached with a tie rod fastener to the brake booster.

Additionally, those vehicles may have loose or missing tie rod nuts and there is no warning to the driver if this happens.

Motorists driving the affected vehicles could experience brake failure if the tie rod stud brakes because the brake master cylinder could separate from the brake booster.

Furthermore, the automaker initiated an investigation into the problem after the owner of a 2021 Honda Pilot reported brake failure. Fortunately, there are no known collisions, injuries, or fatalities due to the problem. There have been at least two warranty claims as of September 2022.

Honda owners and Acura owners will be notified beginning on August 7th, 2023.

Finally, Honda intends to ward off any brake failure by replacing any missing nuts, as well as brake booster assembly components if they are damaged.
